The Central Devon Conservatives Patrons Club launched its 2026 programme in style with a well‑attended spring lunch in North Bovey, marking the first event of the year for the long‑established and active organisation.
Members gathered at the Ring of Bells, North Bovey, enjoying good food and lively conversation in an informal setting that reflected the camaraderie and enthusiasm that has sustained the Patrons Club for many years.
The highlight of the event was a fascinating talk by guest speaker Rebekah (Becks) Pearson, who shared insights from her extensive research into the lives and experiences of the Devonshire Land Girls during the Second World War.
Living in South Devon, Becks has spent several years uncovering personal stories, archive material and local records to shed light on the vital contribution made by women who worked on the land at a time when Britain’s food security was under immense pressure. Her talk explored how these women answered the national call to serve, adapting to physically demanding agricultural roles and often living far from home, while forming strong bonds within rural communities across Devon.
Members were particularly struck by the depth and breadth of the research presented, as well as the way these individual stories brought an important chapter of local and national history vividly to life.
The Central Devon Patrons Club is already looking ahead to its next event, provisionally planned for June or early July, as it continues to offer members a varied programme of social gatherings and thought‑provoking speakers throughout the year.
